Educational Neglect Due to COVID - 19 - Memorandum
As a host of questions have been brought forward re: COVID - 19 and Educational Neglect, please be advised of the following information and share with Educators and support staff. This memo is an addendum to the current Mandated Reporter Training guidelines. Thank you.
Monitoring Student Engagement in Continued Learning
As in-school attendance processes have changed, student engagement remains paramount. During the COVID - 19 disruption of school, district and school administrators should make sure that regular connections are made with students and families.
Teacher and support staff should connect with all students to maintain their relationship, assist with issues and concerns related to assignments and encourage full participation in continued learning opportunities. Identify students who are chronically absent pre-COVID - 19 or otherwise identified as requiring additional support and determine if the available pre-COVID - 19 supports can continue virtually. School Administrators and support staff should reach out to students who are not signing into online learning or engaging in other continued learning opportunities.
Tech4Teens is a Concepts for Adaptive Learning program that empowers youth to share their passion through technology!
Each student receives a free website, and learns how to maintain it safely and securely (caregivers will also have access to websites).
Students have the option to learn how to:
create and edit videos,
create and edit podcasts, and or
create mini-coding programs in Scratch, Alice Animation and Snap!
All student projects are posted on individual websites, and will be showcased on community showcase at end of program. Weekly prizes including cellphone powerbars, wireless earbuds, wireless speakers, and even programmable robots will be given away each week! (Prizes must be picked-up by caregiver.) Students meet only three days a week (hours vary based on programs) and are mentored by college students studying information technology. Students in the greater New Haven area who complete the entire program will be eligible to receive a free refurbished Chromebook!
The program is FREE to all. Space is limited. Register through our website: cfalct.org/tech4teens. Or call: 203.691.1078
