Founded in 2004, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy (JCL) is an award-winning project of the Jewish Community Relations Council of the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, partnering with seven New Haven public schools.
The JCL recruits, trains, places, and supports volunteer reading partners in our local public schools, meeting one-to-one with children to share the pleasures of reading and conversation while enjoying learning in a relaxed, nurturing environment. Students benefit from the interaction with a caring adult, learning together. Davis Street School is honored to celebrate with the many readers visiting Davis Street students to read with them weekly. The fun, knowledge, and attention they have showered our students with is immeasurable. We are grateful for the hard work and commitment of all the JCL readers. Our ice cream social was a lot of fun! We were able to enjoy a cool treat in the sunshine with our peer mentoring buddies and closed out an amazing initiative this year!
Students in first grade wrote “All About” books about an animal of their choice. In art, based on what they knew about their animal, students created sculpture that represented their animal. This is first graders’ publishing celebration where they shared their work with friends and family. In addition to being an integrated project between art and literacy, this also was a project that included selected older students in the sixth grade to help with the art portion of the project. Come celebrate and support our seven selected Davis Street students' spoken word poetry at Long Wharf Theatre, 222 Sargent Drive, New Haven this coming Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. The festival is FREE and open to the public! Bring the whole family!

Pi Day ~ March 14, 2016
Every year we celebrate Pi Day on March 14th because 3.14 are the first three digits in Pi. We celebrated Pi Day here at Davis Street School on Monday, March 14th, 2016. Davis students engaged in many “pi”-themed activities for Pi Day. Here are just some of the many activities that occurred here at Davis: Our 7th and 8th graders participated in a “pi” scavenger hunt on the playground with Mr. Wentworth and Ms. McCray. They also made “Pi” t-shirts in class. Also, they found “pi” by measuring the circumference and diameter of hula hoops. (insert scavenger hunt, t-shirt, and hula hoop pictures) Students in 5th grade made “pi” skylines using graph paper. (insert pi skyline pictures) Ms. Barbour’s students played a game where they had to order the digits of Pi after memorizing as many digits as they could! (insert notecard picture) Students in 4th grade made pi bracelets and found pi by measuring circumference and diameter of circular objects. (insert bracelet and string pictures) Students in grades 3-8 had the opportunity to “pi” a teacher if they could memorize a lot of digits of Pi. Congratulations to Ahad Ansari for memorizing a grand total of 87 digits of Pi!! The winners for each grade level were: Grade 3: D’Andre Thompson Ayoub Abdelfadel Grade 4: Elijah Sorrells Jannat Zouhad Grade 5: Blake Battaglia Ahad Ansari Grade 6: Elena Hogan Perez Angelina Barrett Grade 7: Keona Marie Gomes Tresean Adji Grade 8: Breyona McElveen Hailey Vaught The student council visited with school leaders across the district and had the opportunistic to ask questions about what it takes to be a good leader. District leaders, including the superintendent answered questions from Davis Street students and from students around the district about what it means to be a leader. Great Job to Pricilla Rubio for representing Davis!
Davis staff and students wore a jersey representing their favorite team to raise money for field day which will take place on May 27th. We are all looking forward to that great day.
Davis staff and students are real superheros!
We worked together to raise money for the Make-A-Wish foundation and had some fun by dressing up as our favorite superhero. Together we raised $135. Who is your superhero? - Thank you student council! Teachers and staff spent January's professional development half day learning creative and innovative ways to integrate arts and academics.
The Davis Street Student Council visited the Saint Thomas More Soup Kitchen at Yale on Wednesday, January 13th. We visited this beautiful facility for the first time last year, and have built a strong partnership with them since then. All student council members in grades 3-8 attended the trip and volunteered in many different ways throughout the day. They prepared food, greeted guests, served food, passed soup, cleaned up the facility and wrapped up "to-go" meals for the visitors. These students represented Davis with poise, maturity, and sincere empathy for others. We are so very proud of them and the leadership skills they all possess. Check out the slide show below.
11 Davis Street School 7th and 8th grade girls went to Yale on Friday, December 4th, 2015 for a Girls Math Day. The event was run by Mathcounts, an organization at Yale that works with middle school students on math. The 11 girls participated in different math-related activities and celebrated the accomplishments of women in math. They were encouraged by female Yale students to continue to study math as they get older. The morning ended with a visit from Anjelica Gonzalez, a professor of biomedical engineering at Yale. She talked to the girls about how she got into the field of math and science and the great things she gets to do with her career in biomedical engineering. It was a great day for our Davis Street girls!
Davis Street School partnered with CRISP to have a family science night for grades 3, 4, and 5. Families in attendance had the opportunity to participate in a variety of experiments. Students had fun experimenting with color, force, mass, film, and more. What great ideas for science fair projects!
Today, November 23, 2015, the Davis Street Student Council met to assemble care packages for the Saint Thomas More at Yale Soup Kitchen visitors to take with their Thanksgiving meal on Thursday. All council members, in grades 3-8, did an amazing job assembling care packages with items such as deodorant, chap stick, hand lotion and snacks, and including personalized notes for each one. They wrote very thoughtful and kind words to the soup kitchen visitors and even drew beautiful illustrations. These will surely put a smile on their faces on Thursday. We look forward to visiting the soup kitchen for our first trip in January to meet some of these wonderful community members and give back to those in need.
